This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story commences when the couple transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
